Hi! 👋🏾

What’s good, y’all? Thank you for being here; I appreciate you for it. My name is Matthew.

I’m a writer and storyteller—mostly through essays, creative consulting and artistic collaboration. My purpose as a writer is to craft stories that reckon with the complexities of self, build community and steward deeper, more honest conversations about humanness.

This space is about the ongoing reclamation of my humanity. And I’m inviting others into my process and journey. I hope the many words and stories here will be a mirror for us all to uniquely reflect on our lives, purpose and interconnectedness.

On Overture, you’ll receive stories at three tiers:

  1. Weekly: “Untranslatable Word” of the week.

  2. Bi-weekly: Short-form essays from my “On Living” series reflecting on existential topics.

  3. Ad-hoc: Long-form essays written through compelling personal stories that I hope are as fun to read as they are to write.

All pieces published here, of all types and lengths, will ultimately boil down to the question that stirs me daily: “what does it mean to be human?”

I will also ask you many questions through posts and chats. I will engage with you and inquire about your perspectives. I will be diving into chats with hopes of learning from a kindred community. And I will always do my best to be honest with you and myself so we might all grow together.

If you’re in, subscribe to the newsletter for regular email updates. Most of this content will be available only for paid subscribers, minus the occasional long-form essay, so please also consider a paid subscription if it suits you!

However you engage, I’m grateful!

Why “Overture”?

An overture is the opening orchestral piece to an opera, play, etc. It also marks the introduction to something more substantial to come. I aim to use this space as an honest container to reflect on existential topics with brutal honesty through personal experiences and intersections. In so doing, I want to lay the foundation for a more joyous, fruitful, and intentional life for anyone who engages. I hope this space becomes an overture for those seeking human exchanges of greater depth.
